MVC Volleyball Goals and Expectations
High school sports are a huge commitment. Please review these expectations before you commit to playing volleyball at MVC.
Attendance and Practice:
Athletes are expected to attend all practices. Practices will run from 3:45-5:45 pm (Freshman/JV) or 3:00 - 5:00 pm (Varsity) every Monday-Thursday and on Friday's from 2-4pm. It is the player’s responsibility to set up the court before practice begins and take down the court after practice is over.
All school attendance policies concerning eligibility will be enforced. Please review the Monte Vista Christian Code of Conduct Handbook. If a player misses a practice before a match it can result in not starting or not playing in the next match. If a problem of missed practices persists, the player may be removed from the team at the discretion of their coach, the Varsity Coach and the Athletic Director.
Appointments should be scheduled outside of practice time. If players must miss practice due to an appointment, the athlete needs to contact her coach prior to practice. This is the responsibility of the player, not their parents or another player. If a player must miss practice or knows that she will be late, it is her responsibility to contact her coach before practice. If an athlete is absent from school and/or not able to attend practice she must contact her coach by phone, text or email ASAP. Getting additional help from teachers and/or making up missing work should be taking care of during an off period or in the morning prior to school. Missing practice or an unexcused absence will result in loss of playing time.
Tardiness is not acceptable. Each coach will assign their own policy regarding tardiness. Continual tardiness will result in a loss of playing time.
Teams and Playing Time:
No players are guaranteed spots based on last year’s performance. Cuts will be made for players that are not in the top positions for the teams that match their age or skill level. Each player must win a spot and is encouraged to compete each day to earn a spot on one of the MVC Volleyball Teams.
Freshmen: There will be one Freshmen team consisting of Freshmen players only. Selections for each team will depend on ability, attitude, coachability, and team chemistry. Players on each team will receive playing time each match, with the exclusion of disciplinary situations. However, playing time may not be equal and will be determined by the coach to fulfill team needs.
JV: There will be one JV team consisting of players who are Freshman, Sophomores or Juniors. Selections for each team will depend on ability, attitude, coachability, and team chemistry. Players on each team will receive playing time each match, with the exclusion of disciplinary situations. However, playing time will not be equal and will be determined by the coach to fulfill team needs.
Varsity: There will be one Varsity team consisting of athletes who demonstrate the highest skill level of all athletes at any grade. Players will be placed on teams based on ability, attitude, coachability, and team chemistry. Playing time is not guaranteed and will not be equal. Playing time will depend on consistent execution of skills and team needs demonstrated to the coaching staff.
Grades and Detentions:
Student-Athletes are expected to be responsible and focused students in the classroom. Student-Athletes are to follow the MVC code for athletic participation eligibility. Coaches can request a progress report to be sure players are keeping up with their grades. All detentions need to be made up prior to being able to play in a match, NO EXCEPTIONS! Players must make up detentions on their own time, missing practice to make up detentions is not allowed without playing time penalties. Commitment and discipline in the classroom carry over to the court. Remember to Strive for Excellence!
Addressing Athletic Concerns:
The coaching staff expects that any athletic issues that need attention will be dealt with as quickly as possible. The 24 Hour Rule is enforced so that all parties involved have time to process the situation and handle it appropriately. We encourage the player to first address the issue with her coach, preferably face-to-face. If the matter still needs attention, then the player along with her parent/guardian(s) should schedule a meeting with her coach. If the situation still needs attention, then the Varsity Coach, as well as the Athletic Director, will become involved. Coaches will not meet with parents after a match or practice to discuss coaching decisions or playing time. All meetings must be scheduled in advance, and given a minimum of a 24 hour window after a match.
Home Match Expectations:
Each team must be dressed and ready on the court at the time specified by her coach. Only members of the team are allowed to be at the team bench during the match. Friends and family members are not permitted at the bench.
Members of the Freshman and JV teams are highly encouraged to attend all Varsity home matches. These athletes can assist with shagging volleyballs during the Varsity warm-ups. Athletes are encouraged to sit in the student section during the match and support the Varsity team. All of the athletes will have responsibilities during other home matches (ie. book, scoreboard, lines). A rotating schedule will be determined by the coach so players and parents know ahead of time which games they have to work.
ALL players must wear tennis shoes prior and during matches in order to shag and line judge. NO exceptions; this is a league rule.
Away Match Expectations:
All players must ride the bus to and from away matches and tournaments, unless they drive themselves and have the appropriate paperwork tuned in ahead of time. Players should be ready to board the bus five minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Bus rides together are part of being a member of the MVC Mustang Volleyball Program.
All personal items must be removed from the bus when we arrive to the site. Everyone will help carry equipment on and off the bus. Team captains will be sure the bus is cleared and clean.
All players must sign out with their head coach before leaving from an away match. A van will bring players back to school if their parents cannot come to the match. Players cannot drive other players after an away match. Transportation has to be from parents or coaches. This is a school mandated rule that all sports are required to follow.
Remember, we represent Monte Vista Christian and the Mustang Volleyball Program when we are on trips. Keep the bus clean, be polite, and conduct yourself in a professional manner.
Players will either dress-up or wear MVC Mustang Volleyball gear the day of a match. Coaches or Team Captains will decide what their team will wear the day of a match. Players are expected to wear clothing that follows the school’s dress code policy. Be sure to represent the MVC Mustang Volleyball Program in a positive manner.
